My name is Isabel Ramos (Rah-mos) and I am from a small town called Vandergrift which is roughly 40 minutes northeast of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I am doing a dual degree program here at Bucknell in environmental engineering and engineering management, so I will be graduating in 2027. Growing up, I had countless movie nights with my family, consisting of both my parents and my three brothers, two older and one younger. Leading me to enjoy watching almost every type of movie. I also love playing with my three dogs, all of them are roughly the same age, three and a half. I have two Korean Jindos, Bo and Cosmo, and one Japanese Tosa, Akio. My family and friends are a big part of who I am, so I love doing whatever I can with them.
Following the first seven paragraphs of the second essay, The Way, the concept of instinct is recurring throughout and is contradicted as the essay continues because of its ability to insight fear, while simultaneously having a thought system where both the fear is justified and where it is not. Specifically in the essay, the instinct of preserving the species is contradicted by the means of how the offspring is created. On one hand, the idea of continuing the species is seen as a “basic” instinct where the ultimate end goal of the species is to produce offspring. Meaning that the only result that matters is the production of offspring, no matter the means of how it was produced, in turn inciting fear. This statement alone sparks contradiction because by any means necessary can include those instances of sexual assault and or rape. Which directly contradicts the instinct to protect and preserve the species and all those found within that species, since harm is being done to a member of the species. However, the production of an offspring is created, but at what cost and is it justified? These two instincts to both preserve and protect the species are at “war” with one another. The concept of by whatever means necessary to produce offspring, not only incites physical fears to members of the species of being assaulted, but also social fears to the entirety of society of that risk. A direct correlation of totalitarianism, is how the means of the result aren’t important, rather the end result is of the utmost importance.
