The readings in That Hideous Strength by C.S. Lewis and those in The Age of Surveillance Capitalism by Shoshana Zuboff relate to one another because of there being the theme of using humans for their resources. In ‘That Hideous Strength’ when speaking with the Dennistons, Jane is told to “give yourself to us” when referring to those that reside within St. Anne’s (Lewis 102.) In regards to giving oneself to another entity, the person that is giving is often being used for some purpose, in this case, Jane’s “seer” abilities. Those within St. Anne’s want to use Jane in order to gain knowledge of what she sees in her dreams, in order to know what has happened to other individuals and try to understand the dreams. This idea directly relates to The Age of Surveillance Capitalism where Google is using people in order to gain data for their services. Google and other similar services, have bought other companies in order to obtain the manufacturing necessary for “facial recognition, “deep learning,” augmented reality, and more” that all add to their pool of data (Zuboff 73.) In this case, machines and services are using people’s information in attempts to expand their data, which further allows them to create and or obtain other resources to gain more information on people. Google is using people and their information including, searches and faces in order to better get an understanding of people as a whole. Which in turn they can use that understanding of people to benefit themselves even more due to their ways of using people as resources for their data. This coincides with the ideas found in That Hideous Strength because in both cases, there is some higher power and or figure that has a goal of gaining information out of people. In Jane’s case it is her dreams and in the case with Google and the everyday user, it is their personal information that is obtained through the use of Google’s numerous services. With both of these cases, a singular person or group of persons, are being exploited by those with more power in order for those in power to gain more power. Google would gain more information to continue their ever growing monopoly and those at St. Anne’s would acquire more knowledge about the events that are happening to expand their knowledge, putting themselves at a higher advantage, knowledge wise.
