LotR – Wed. October 12

When imagining the significance of a mirror, most readers jump to the conclusion that its meaning is to reflect one’s personal self, therefore it is a surprise to readers that the Mirror of Galadriel allows for more than a personal reflection. In chapter seven, of book two of the Lord of the Rings by J.R.R Tolkien, titled “The Mirror Of Galadriel” there is a focus on multiple different themes including that of surveillance. The chapter focuses on a mirror which allows the viewer to see visions of the past, present and future. The chapter starts with a calming tone, where Frodo and the others enjoy a peaceful time in Lorien. This tone quickly changes when Sam and Frodo look into the mirror and see the horrors the future holds, to a more threatening tone of what is to come. When Frodo looks into the mirror, it suddenly turns “altogether dark” and he sees “the Eye” that begins to search for the Ring, however the Eye “could not see him” (Tolkien Ⅰ, 355). The beginning of Frodo looking into the mirror depicted scenes of Bilbo and a ship vanishing, followed by the sudden shift to a dark, terror filled reality where Sauron and the Eye are in search of the Ring and will do whatever is necessary to retrieve it. The mirror is a symbol of surveillance due to the fact that Frodo is able to see the Eye and its actions, without the Eye knowing. Similarly, to a prominent theme in Shoshanna Zuboff’s The Age of Surveillance Capitalism where the idea of big technological companies are taking people’s data and storing it is recurring and that those companies are able to “nudge us” in the direction of their “closest approximation to certainty” (Zuboff 238). Big companies are able to have a hidden surveillance over its users similarly to the users of the Mirror of Galadriel and whatever/whomever it is looking at. The mirror symbolizes the unknowing surveillance that people or companies are able to have over its users. Showing the unknowns that people experience in their everyday lives that their personal information is under constant surveillance and collection.
