LotR – Wed. November 9

Oftentimes where there are deep connections between a variety of different factors the entirety of the system falls apart because of the ties between the elements when the center of the system falls. In J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, the Ring otherwise known as the “One Ring” has deep connections to Sauron and his realm. Sauron is the figure within the novel that wants the Ring in order to gain full control over Middle Earth, due to him creating the Ring with ultimate power over the other rings in existence. The Ring has deeply rooted connections to Sauron himself and all of his areas of power as a result. The Ring, however met its demise in Mount Doom at the hands of Sam, Frodo and Gollum towards the end of the novel. Following the Ring being destroyed, Sauron’s realm began to disintegrate, for example the towers themselve “swayed, tottered and fell down” along with other elements that “crumbled” (Tolkien Ⅲ, 928). Sauron’s realm and reign was over and as a result all of the components of his reign/realm began to fall apart. The effects of the Ring being destroyed and Sauron’s reign ending are seen throughout the entirety of Middle Earth wherever Sauron had control over. Similarly in one of C.S. Lewis’s more philosophical works, The Abolition of Man, the continued emphasis on the Tao is seen throughout the entirety of the book. According to Lewis, the Tao is deeply rooted in a plethora of things and that “if the Tao falls, all his own conceptions of value fall with it” meaning that if the Tao were to fall everything connected to the Tao would follow suit (Lewis 20). This idea is similar to that of a tree and that if you were to cut the tree down from the root, all of the branches would fall down too. In the case with Lewis, the Tao is the root and its outreaching effects are the branches. When the Tao falls, everything connected to the Tao itself would fall as a result of its connection to the Tao. In the case with Tolkien, the Ring is a root and the branches consist of Sauron himself and his expansive control throughout Middle Earth. When the Ring falls, everything that has a connection with Sauron falls including Sauron himself due to his connection to the Ring. All in all, with the demise of a central item or ideal, all the surrounding connections to said item/ideal would cease to exist.
