Chernobyl – Wed. September 21

Within HBO’s miniseries Chernobyl and C.S. Lewis’s That Hideous Strength has a common theme of being “duty” because of both the series. In the miniseries Chernobyl, the focus centers around the aftermath of the Chernobyl nuclear accident of the 1980s. One portion of the show focuses on the need of three volunteers, who are essentially volunteering to die. One of the main characters, Boris Shcherbina, states that three people will “do it because it must be done, do it because no one else can and if you don’t, millions will die” (2-55). While they understand the sacrifice they would be making, Shcherbina uses a sort of fear technique in order to emphasize the duty that must be done by those three individuals. The duty of which being the death to themselves in order to save millions others, all because of their job titles. This theme of duty is also found within That Hideous Strength, where the Director is speaking and is motivating his followers by stating that “you have done what is required of you” and that those who did “have obeyed and waited” (Lewis 344.) The Director is attempting to create a sense of purpose within his followers and what they do. He mentions what they have done and how they have done it, was the way as it was intended. In simpler terms, they did their duty like those individuals in Chernobyl who did their duty to volunteer and sacrifice their lives for the greater good. In That Hideous Strength the characters are following the Director and doing as they’re told in order to attempt to preserve Britain and to protect humanity. In both cases there is a duty in order to protect humanity as a whole. In Chernobyl, they are protecting humanity from the risks of radiation and then in That Hideous Strength, they are protecting humanity from the threat that N.I.C.E poses. In both cases the characters have a duty to protect humanity and nature as a whole.
