When looking at an overview of high fantasy stories, the saving of one group by their allies is a recurring theme, therefore, J.R.R. Tolkien utilizes this theme within his novel The Lord of the Rings. Within the fifth book of his novel, a large battle is occurring between the dark forces of Sauron and those that are allied against Sauron. Those allied against Sauron in this battle include forces from Gondor and those from Rohan as well. The battle had begun with just the forces of Sauron and those of Gondor, the powers of Gondor were being overwhelmed by Sauron’s powers leading to a level of defeat within Gondor’s forces. Denethor, the leader of Gondor’s forces, began accepting the defeat and even began to plan his and his sons’ funerals. This was out of a lack of hope, due to his lack of knowledge of whether or not any other groups were coming to fight the battle. Little to Denethor’s knowledge, was the messenger Hirgon who was sent to deliver the message of Rohan taking part in the battle. This message was however never delivered due to the death of Hirgon on his way to deliver the message. Those from Rohan did not learn of this until they came across Hirgon’s body on the way to Minas Tirith. The realization that their message never made it caused Theoden, the King of Rohan, to realize that “Denethor has heard no news of our riding and will despair of our coming” meaning that those in Gondor will have little to any hope (Tolkien Ⅲ, 871). This lack of hope is seen by Denethor’s acceptance of death. Denethor had no idea that there were reinforcements on their way along with the rest of the Gondor people. The knowledge never reached Denethor prior to their arrival, but the knowing of their arrival is “late better than never” which could not have been a truer statement (Tolkien Ⅲ, 871). The arrival of those from Rohan to Minas Tirith, lacked any true challenges and they began to remove those from Mordor, the forces of Sauron. Their arrival was the recurring theme, where unbeknownst to a group losing all hope, their saviors are on their way.
