Well known fantasy author J.R.R. Tolkien has his own opinions of fantasy writing, therefore, in his writings he explicitly follows his beliefs. Tolkien believed that fantasy writing should be captivating and as though the reader themselves were inside the fantasy land. In other words, he strongly believed that fantasy writing should be immersive which he fulfills with his vivid imagery in his works. His works including The Lord of the Rings and his short story “Leaf by Niggle” are abundant with detailed imagery allowing the reader to become entranced by the story at hand. In his short story, Tolkien uses fluid imagery to describe the painting that Niggle was creating by incorporating phrases describing his leaves with specific “sheen”, “shape” and the “glistening of dewdrops” in order to allow the reader to fully immerse themselves in the story (Tolkien 1). . Tolkien also uses phrases that mimic and or state sounds in order to allow the reader to have yet another deeper connection to the story through their own knowledge of these events. Like the use of stating that the rain “poured in” through the holes left from the loss of “half of the shingles” on his roof due to the wind. (Tolkien 2). Through fantasy writings, Tolkien is able to address real-world problems in a less obvious manner allowing the reader to become familiar with certain ideas, without the blatant stating of the idea. In his short story, Tolkien tackles the problem at hand with people becoming less appreciative of the arts of all forms, but also with the idea that people should be caring of one another in order for society to run smoothly. In the story, Niggle cherishes his painting whereas other characters like Parish fail to see the importance of art and rather see it as a waste. This shows how people in modern times are separating themselves from creative outlets and putting less of a value on them as well. Tolkien also addresses the fact that the importance of humans relying on one another is vital in order for society to run as originally intended. In the story, those who do not follow this idea are met with the law due to this idea being a cornerstone of their society, and a failure to follow it comes with consequences. This is a big real-world issue due to the lack of human interaction and care for one another allowing for individuals to fall through the cracks and cause for even more detrimental societal effects.
